Places to visit
COLONIA
A lot of tourists are introduced to Uruguay through Colonia, while visiting Buenos Aires. Only one hour across the river by ferry, awaits the charming city of Colonia del Sacramento, which has been declared Historical Heritage of Humanity. The name of the "departamento" (province) is Colonia, and there are a couple of important, small cities, like Colonia Suiza, Colonia Valdense, Carmelo, etc., all of which offer various rural experiences (cheese farms in Colonia Suiza, for example). But the most popular of all is the capital city, Colonia del Sacramento, or simply "Colonia", for practical purposes.
The Old City, just a handful of blocks preserved from the past, offers an unforgettable experience. There are numerous restaurants, souvenir and art stores, and, of course hotels, some nestled next to the river, like the Posada del Río. I also stayed at the Casa del Naranjo, just a short two streets from the Old City. If you can stay overnight and would like a romantic evening, I think there are few places as romantic as Colonia. Ahhh...! :) I love Colonia!
